Canon XA50

Coming from the DSLR and Cinema Camera world, I rolled my eyes at the mention of camcorders. That was me then - before my week spent with the Canon XA50, rented from I managed to squeeze in as much filming as possible with the XA50 before I had to return it. The end goal is to find a camera that feels like “home” in my hands to film documentaries. Here’s some test footage.

I fully intended to also rent the C100 Mark II and possibly the C200 to test them both. But now that I’ve shot with the XA50 … not sure if I need to try out more cameras. A hand in a glove … that was my experience with the XA50. It’s not a perfect documentary camera, but it came quite close … for me. The key word is “for me.”

The Book Lovers Series Ep. 11: Kramerbooks & Afterwords

Episode 11 of The Book Lovers Series is here! I’m excited to share this one in particular because it’s my favorite bookstore in Washington, D.C. As local as it can get since I’m from the DC metro area. Here is Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe. You must visit this spot if you’re ever in the District. No fret if you’re a night owl. The bookstore is open daily until 1AM and on Fridays and Saturdays until 3AM. Yep, you heard it right. And if you’re an early bird, well is 7:30AM early enough for you?

Tom Ford

I’ve watched this Tom Ford documentary so many times … and yet each time I still take away something new. I love his movies, especially A Single Man with Colin Firth. Every frame, every moment was designed to the minute detail and is absolutely gorgeous. Combine exquisite design with a passion for filmmaking and there’s Mr. Tom Ford.

The New Criterion Channel

Ever since Filmstruck shut down, I’ve been in a bit of a movie funk. Then Criterion announced they will have their own channel, my mood lifted. Recently, I received an email from Criterion notifying of their new channel’s arrival in April 2019. New charter members get free Movie of the Week if they sign up now. So … of course … I signed up!! Excited about all these amazing classic films and extra goodies that will be coming our way. I especially love Director’s Commentaries. This week’s movie is MIKEY & NICKY directed by Elaine May which I’ve never seen before. Can’t wait!
